As a young woman I knew I wanted to serve my country and go to medical school. Fortunately I was able to combine both of these desires and found myself deployed to the Middle East as an Air Force medical officer, titled Flight Surgeon, assigned to a combat flying unit. Upon return, I developed skin changes and several vague symptoms. These gradually worsened until the diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s) was made; soon after was thyroid cancer.
After years of struggling to return to wellness, I realized that traditional medicine could not completely cure what ailed me, so I turned to naturopathic and holistic methods. Experiencing the benefits of these practices, I began to explore ways of gaining my own expertise in these methods in hopes of combing eastern and western philosophy to help heal others. It began with certification in holistic health and nutrition.
I learned that true health wasn’t just about maintaining a balanced lifestyle and eating organic. It’s also about ridding my environment of all the chemicals possible. My husband joined me in this philosophy, which lead to the purchase of a local property with a breath taking organic garden and nursery in Sayville, NY.
In a place of true healing, I began to learn about some of the properties of the plants around us, from natural anxiety reducers and anti-inflammatory agents to easing indigestion, and of course insect repellent. As a pretty profound insect attractor, I had my own need for an all-natural insect repellent that actually worked. So I developed my own using our organic garden and soon friends were referring to me as “Doctor Herb” – which just happens to align with my initials HRB!
The insect repellent was the first product I made and now I have a few more, but recognize that it’s a journey and path of discovery, so no doubt there will be even more to follow. My desire is to share this very special place, natural healing, and way of life with others, one piece at a time. Care to join me?
